Daniel “Dan” S. Gilkey, AKA “Gilk” and “Danny Boy”, 70 years of age, peacefully passed away on Monday, May 20, 2024 at Adena Regional Medical Center in Chillicothe, Ohio.
Dan was born on October 13, 1953 in Cincinnati, Ohio to the late Bob and Ruth Gilkey. He was the third of four children.
Dan attended St. William, Delhi Junior High and Oak Hills High school prior to joining the U.S. Army.
Dan joined the Army in February, 1971. He completed basic training at Fort Leonard Wood, Missouri and went on to receive additional training in communications at Ft Benning, Georgia which is now Ft Moore, Ft Huachuca, Arizona and Ft Lee, Virginia which is now Ft Greg-Adams.
He completed his communications training and was sent to Vietnam in February, 1972.
While in Vietnam he was stationed at Da Nang Air Base and Tan Son Nhat Air Base. He also traveled in and around Quy Nhon and Saigon. Dan was honorably discharged from the Armed Forces in November, 1973.
Once Dan returned to civilian life he got his old job back at United Dairy Farmers and eventually gained employment at Frisch’s where he became the manager. It wasn’t until November 14, 1977 that he began his career with the United States Postal Service. For most of Dan’s career at the Post Office he served the Price Hill community. He was a clerk at the Price Hill Post Office at 975 Enright Ave. for most of his 32 year tenure. He prided himself on helping the community and considered it his duty that every customer be satisfied. Dan retired from the Post office on October 31, 2009.
Throughout his life in Cincinnati, Dan enjoyed many hobbies. Picking up where his father left off, he loved working on genealogy and continued in tracing the family roots back even further. He was especially fond of history, in particular the Civil War and how many soldiers were connected to his family tree.
Dan also enjoyed nature. The mountains may have been his favorite place to visit. He liked to go rafting, canoeing and camping. He enjoyed hikes and loved a good rain storm. He also enjoyed horses. While in the military in Arizona he trained horses for a short time and did a lot of horse back riding in his free time.
Dan put his green thumb to good use in his joy of gardening while growing different kinds of plants and flowers along with a variety of vegetables and fruits. Dan not only enjoyed fishing but also loved having them in his home. At one point of his life he had as many as 20 tanks in operation, many of them with their own live vegetation.
Everyone that knew Dan would agree of how kind and generous he was. He took great pleasure in giving to the community. Dan loved Price Hill. He spent most of his adult life in the area. He loved his neighbors and the community. For many years, he spent Thanksgiving Day preparing and serving turkey to those in need.
Dan will be dearly missed by so many. He leaves behind two children, Rachel Scanlon and Rob (Lani) Gilkey. Six grandchildren, Liam, Melody, Gabe, Will, Spencer, and Elena. Three siblings, Sharon (Jim) Boland, Bob (Linda) Gilkey, and Pam (Harry) Stoughton along with many nieces, nephews, and life long friends.
