Cornelius "Neal" J. Mills

Cornelius “Neal” James Mills, a devoted husband, father, grandfather, and man of deep faith, passed away peacefully on March 7, 2025, just one day shy of his 93rd birthday. Born, raised, and a lifelong resident of Cincinnati, Ohio, Neal’s only time away from home was spent serving his country aboard the USS Cogswell (DD-651) during the Korean War. His service in the Navy instilled in him a strong work ethic and a dedication to helping others—values he carried throughout his life. After his military service, Neal became Director of maintenance at Saint Peter in Chains Cathedral, a position he faithfully held for over 30 years. His work went beyond maintaining a building—he maintained the spirit of those who entered, always willing to lend a helping hand or offer a moment of kindness. Neal was deeply devoted to serving the underprivileged and those in need. He spent countless hours visiting hospitals, offering prayer and communion, and comforting people in their final moments. His faith was the guiding force in his life, and he was an active member of the Sacred Heart of Jesus Society, which created and distributed portraits of Jesus and rosaries to spread the word of God. A skilled mechanic, there were very few things Neal couldn’t fix. Whether it was a broken engine or a troubled heart, he had a way of making things right. The greatest joy of his life was his family, especially his beloved wife, MaryAnn Mills, with whom he shared an incredible 70 years of marriage. Their love was the foundation of their family and a testament to unwavering commitment. In his youth, Neal attended Elder High School, and he was known for his spirited personality—quick to say, “I’m gonna punch you in the nose.” As he grew older, his words softened, often saying instead, “I just want to do what Jesus wants me to do.”

Visitation will be held at St. Antoninus Church on Friday March 14, 2025 from 930am until the time of the Mass of Christian Burial at 1030am.

Neal is survived by his loving family: Wife: MaryAnn Mills Daughter: Kathleen (Woodrow) Hinton Sons: Michael (Nancy) Mills, Robert (Terri) Mills. Grandchildren: Woodrow J. (Lisa) Hinton III, Christina (Scott) Sievering, Adam Mills, Ryan Mills. Great-Grandchildren: Madison Marie Sievering, Lilly Ann Sievering, Woodrow J. Hinton IV. Sister: Eileen Bacovin. Neal’s unwavering faith, generosity, and love for his family will be forever remembered.

In lieu of flowers, the family asks that donations be made in Neal’s honor to a local charity supporting the underprivileged—continuing his legacy of service and kindness. Neal was a member of the St. Vincent de Paul Society.
