Albert B. Piening

August 8, 1940- February 25, 2022. On Friday, February 25, 2022, Albert B. (Al) Piening passed away at the age of 81.

Al was married to Claire (Rolfes) Piening for nearly 61 years. He was the son of the late Albert B. Piening Sr. and the late Evelyn (Huber) Piening. Al was a loving brother to Dennis (Connie) Piening, and preceded in death by his brothers Jim Piening and Tom Piening. He was also a loving father to the late Jennifer Piening, Jeff (Sandy) Piening, Cathy (Chuck) Smith, Michelle (Roger) West, David (Tricia) Piening, and Kristi (Chris) Wilms. Beloved Grandfather to Chelsea (Tyler) Smith, Austin and Rowan Piening, David and Lindsay Smith, Sarah Phillips, Stephanie, Christian, Jennifer, Isaac and the late Haley Piening, Eric and Ryan West, Riley, Luke, Amelia, and Andrew Wilms, and Great-Grandfather to Roselyn Smith.

Al grew up in the Price Hill area and attended Our Lady of Grace, Elder High School and Central High School. He joined the Navy immediately following high school for one year, and finished his military service in the Army. He was honorably discharged from both branches. He married Claire on June 3, 1961.


After the military, Al joined the Cincinnati Fire Department and spent 46 years making a legendary career. His passion for the department and helping others was untouchable. Al was a lieutenant for a majority of his tenure. He later became a paramedic and retired from Rescue 2 as a paramedic supervisor at the age of 68 on December 26, 2008. The biggest challenge became beating Al to an emergency scene. Al never knew a stranger and was always out and about talking to anyone and everyone, especially hanging out at various fire departments after retirement.

Al loved his family and was proud of all of his children and grandchildren. He loved big family gatherings as well as stopping over at random times just to say hey and visit. He will be dearly missed by all, especially his family.

Visitation will be held on March 4, 2022, at Radel Funeral Home, 650 Neeb Rd., Cincinnati, Ohio 45233 from 5-7 pm. Mass of Christian Burial will be held at Our Lady of Victory Church, 808 Neeb Rd., Cincinnati, Ohio 45233 at 11am. Burial to follow at the cemetery behind the church.
